Volvo: 1988 volvo 240 pcv filter or bad rings?, pcv system, flame trap

Question
Hi, my car about 2 months ago started to spill out oil from the back of the valve cover, the circle shaped plug popped out and i got a new one about a week later, it fixed that problem. After I fixed that it started to leak from the oil cap, so I got a new seal, still leaked, I got a new cap, still leaked, I got a new valve cover, still leaked out the cap. I was told that the rings probably went bad and is building to much pressure. A couple days later I had a flat so I got new tires and they saw the leak and told me about it, I told them what all I did and told them that I was told that the rings are probably bad. The mechanic said that probably isn't so, he told me to clean the Filter in the PCV system.(i think thats what he said, it had something to do with the PCV system) I asked a guy at AdvancedAuto and he said that 1988 240s don't have a PCV system. What does it sound like to you, can I fix it without replacing the engine or am I in the market for another car?

Answer
Brian,
Find a shop that KNOWS the Volvo and they can service the flame trap. That will slow down some of the leaks if damage was not already done to the seals. If there was no service on the flame trap in a couple of years it is worth doing the service to see if that helps.
