Volvo: 1999 Volvo C70 Coupe, volvo c70 coupe, coolant tank

Question
Hello, I purchased a 1999 C70 in 2002.  In 2006 the engine siezed and I paid $10,000 for a new Volvo engine (rebuilt). In February 2008 my car began to overheat and I had the radiator replaced.  April 2008 (40,000 miles later) the car overheated, stalled and now I need another engine.  The coolant tank was constantly empty but I never saw it leaking.  The mechanic now tells me it is leaking from the rear of the engine as quickly as they fill the tank.  I suspect there is an inherent cooling problem with my car. I'm at wits end as I think there is a defect somewhere.

Answer
Tanya,
I am not aware of an ongoing coolant leakage problem. It is common to replace the radiator after a few years. If the tank was continually empty it should have been checked out very closely, and the level checked daily until the time the coolant tank was found to not have been low. Over the course of years certain things wear and will need attention and or replacement. In April the engine would had to of been extremely hot, overheated for a long time to create the need for another engine. In the event of another overheating as soon as the temp gauge rises stop the car before the serious damage occurs.
