Volvo: Locked glove compartment, latch assembly, thin blade

Question
For no apparent reason, the glove compartment on my 1994 850 Volvo is stuck shut.  The lock mechanism seems to operate normally, but even in the unlocked position, I cannot get the regular latch mechanism to release the door.  I've tried unsuccessfully to slide a thin blade behind the door to release any latch there.  There does not seem to be any obstruction, but I cannot release the center latch.  Is there any way to open the door without ruining it?

Answer
Ted,
Most times the lock breaks in the locked position and will not release. I always tell my customer that it needs to be pryed open and the lock/latch assembly replaced. Carefully use a hooked tool in the center of the door pushed in behind the door, prying it open. Pulling straight out so you will not mark up the dash cover.
