Volvo: Transmission shifting irregularly, throttle position sensor, solenoids

Question

Hello Ray,

the problem I'm having with the vehicle is the trans shifts rough when the car is started cold, as soon as the car reaches operating temp there is no rough shifting. I believe the problem is either the throttle position sensor, or the worn control unit in the transmission housing. because all the mechanical parts of the transmission were renewed last year, except for the control unit which is housing the solenoids and the circuitry. knowing that the car is almost 13 yrs old do you thing its a good idea to replace to throttle position sensor and the control unit in the transmission housing. the trans is a AW50-42LE.because I know that this control unit is responsible of the shifting and the lockup engagement times.

thanks

Answer
Mete,
The real question here is "are you willing to spend the money". If putting some money into the car will make the shifts smoother cold and you feel the money was well spent, do it. That is if you are sure that the repairs will fix the car. Remember that some repairs are a bit of a gamble. Your other choices, well live with it, try a used trans or go for a reman unit from Volvo.
