Volvo: Volvo 98 v70 xc, speed signals, sensor wires

Question
QUESTION: Hey! I have just bought this with 178K miles and was functioning quite all right. We figured out a problem with steering rank leaking, and was about to solve it. But, yesterday it started not working. After a jump we took it to home. Today we made another jump to take it to the mechanic, but then the service light was also on and the speedometer, and others on the board started not working. We are waiting to hear from the mechanic but what could be the problem or problems? Thanks so much!

ANSWER: Esin,
You say there is a steering rack leak, this will likely need replacement. What "started not working"? No power steering? It would have lost all the fluid. Had to "jump" the battery, that is a bad battery or something that could have been left on draining the battery. A close check of the charging system is needed.

QUESTION: Hello. so the steering is wotking right now, we needed to fill the steering oil and sometime soon need to change the rank. that's ok. the more urgent problem seems to be a shortcircuit in the computer related to the dash board, which occurred during the jump start. the dash board is not working right now, no movement in the speedometer, no memory, etc. How do you think we can repair that? Thanks so much again!

Answer
Esin,
Dash cluster get complicated. If it is just the speedo and the odometer/trip meter, you may have an ABS control unit that has gone out and no speed signals are getting to the cluster. If that is the case a new control unit is needed. There might be power flow problems or a burnt out cluster if more is worng. Testing is needed, you have to monitor the speed signal in the ABS and Motronic via a scan tool see if there is one. Speed sensor wires or sensor might be bad.
