Audi Repair: audi dashboard kights, illumination lights, cluster one

Question
QUESTION: my mate has a 1998 audi a4 and it has no dashboard illumination lights at all
we checked for 12 volts to the bulb supply on the dash panel and it is OK . the problem seems to be on the negative side of the circuit , but without a circuit diagram I am stuffed .
Is there a dimmer somewhere in the circuit cos he cannot find one and that would possibly explain the symptoms,
every thing else on the dash works including all the warning lights for ignition , oil etc .

if there is a dimmer - where is it ?

thanks
Gerry

ANSWER: Hi,  YEs there is a dimmer, it could be next to the main light switch but typically it is one of the pushbuttons that are in the dash cluster.  One of them typically turnsas well as pushes the trip reset, this is the dimmer.  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: I forgot to tell you I'm in the UK and did not realise you were in US .
I tried the trip button , but it doesn't turn , and I the light switch stalk is on the steering column .
It's a dark and scary place without a dash light - and speed cameras are operated by nasty big men with fixed penalty notebooks ,
Help !
thanks for your help

Answer
I heard about the number of speed camera's in the UK; I guess you're driving with a flashlight to keep your license clean?  Anyway I am positive there has to be a dimmer on this circuit; just not sure if they moved it for the UK market.  On the US models there are two black buttons in the cluster, one of those turns and is the dimmer.  If you have two of those, and neither of those turn, then perhaps that is the issue.  Also your user manual should give you the location of the dimmer.  Let me know,  Jan
