Volvo: volvo, mixture settings, incorrect fuel

Question
My volvo, is a 1984 240 turbo. its absolutly...HORRIBLE on gas right now, and was not when i bought it. the whole muffler is in to be replaced right now, bcz the egsaust fell off and there is two holes in the muffler(1. would this make it bad on gas) ....i was also wondering...on the turbo, its leaking somewhere "oozy stuff" which i've been told must be oil :), and must be something to do with a seal? do you have any ideas on what could make it leak like that? and would that Also make it bad on gas?

Answer
Jennifer,
The hole in the exhaust would not cause a large change in the fuel usage. There are seals in the turbo that prevent the oil that lubricates it from leaking. If the leak is bad the turbo will need rebuilding. Oil seeping from a turbo would not be the cause of higher fuel usage. The fuel usage would be more like, needing a tune up, incorrect fuel mixture settings, over pressure due to fuel regulator. Something along those lines. Thing will need testing to see if all specs are correct.
