Volvo: Starter will not crank, screw driver, shift lock

Question
First I noticed the shift lock is engaged and I can't put it into gear unless I press the shift release button. I pressed on the brake and turn the key and it will not unlock. Second I turn the key and the starter will not crank. I can get the starter to crank if I stick a screw driver down in the engine and touch the terminals to the starter. I replaced the starter still no luck. Thanks

Answer
Richard,
Netural safety switch might be out of adjustment, since you stated that the shifter is not working properly. You need to inspect to see what is going on in the shifter. You know the engine will crank so the connection between the key and the starter is faulty. Start tracing where the power goes and see what stops it. Not an easy task you will need to get into it and see what works and what does not.
