Volvo: 1987 volvo 240 DL wont start, volvo 240 dl, air intake hose

Question
I am tearing my hair out!  My volvo will not start; it seems to be when the weather is colder than 40 degrees out. I have spent over $1,000 in the last 3 weeks to have it fixed. My mechanic replaced (during 3 visits the last few weeks) a spark plug, starter, starter harness, air intake hose, and some other things (can't remember what they are). Each time of the three times I have picked it up from the shop it starts right up and we think it is fixed. The next morning it won't start. This happened this morning when it was about 35 degrees out; my boyfriend went home a few minutes ago (it is now 11:00 and over 50 degrees out) and it started right up!  Any ideas?

Answer
Maryann,
So when it will not start are the fuel pumps running? Do you have enough fuel pressure? It should be about 42 psi. Your car has two fuel pumps one in the tank and one under the body left side. Are you getting spark when this happens? Will the battery pass a test, will it hold up to crank over the engine at a fast speed? How about the throttle housing is it all clogged and in need of cleaning? If you are not going to test these things yourself then you really need a better shop to deal with. Find one that works on Volvo's, you will find they know more of how to work and diagnosis your vehicle.
