Question
My engine is smoking - I noticed a burning smell- it stopped as soon as I turned off the engine- and it was not much- there has been an oil pan leak that I have not been able to afford having fixed- occasionally I have to check the oil but last I checked it was half way to the dip stk line. Do you think if I just keep putting oil in it will be ok until I can afford to repair what ever that oil pan thing is?

Answer
Maura,
Well you need to identify the smoking. It could be burning coolant, oil, or maybe just a bit of steam because of the tempatures. Get it checked right away so more damage is not done. Your oil pan leak is not likely the cause of the smoking unless it is so bad that the oil is getting on the exhaust system. But turning off the motor would not stop the smoking immediately.
