Volvo: 1999 - V70, rear drive shaft, drive shaft

Question
Gday i have two questions.  I have just brought a V70 and need a bit of help in working out the AC controls vs normal heating.  As soon as i turn on the fan switch to Auto or manual adjust the AC light turns on & i cannot turn it off from the switch.  I just want to be able to use the fans without the Air Condition kicking in.

The 2nd question is when i brake the car makes a loud clonking noise and the garage said that it is the part on the rear drive shaft and that it is nothing to be concerned with as it would be expensive to replace.  Does this sound right.

Thanks,

Andy

Answer
Andy,
On the A/C panel if the button that turns on/off the A/C is not working and the vent position switch is not in the defrost mode the compressor should remain off. If it does not testing will need to be done to see what is power up the compressor with the switch off.
I do not really agree with your shop. A noise while braking, that is part of the rear driveshaft??? Get a second opinion, go to a shop that works on Volvo's and have them test and then explain/show you what is wrong, then you make the decision if the fault needs attention.
