Volvo: 96 850 turbo, egr valve, fuel pump

while driving and after parking i sometimes get a raw fuel smell. i have checked the lines and they are not leaking. at the bottom of the evap. canister there is a gummy (like tar) substance. i am pretty sure it is the evap that is bad, but could it also be the egr valve.

Evap canister should only have to hold fumes. Do make sure that none of the lines to it are cracked. So if gas is leaking out of it more testing is needed. The EGR does not have any fuel that flows through it. If it was stuck open your idle would be very poor. The top portion of the fuel pump often leaks remove the inspection cover and look at it.
