Volvo: Buy or not to buy, volvo dealers, maintance

Question
My neighbor has offered us his 1999 S70 with 200k on it.  For a very great price.  Is that too may miles on it even for a great price? It has only been serviced at Volvo Dealers, he has the proof of that I know he was crazy about upkeep, so I know it has been very well looked after.  Am I setting myself up for years of repair with that many miles.  This will be just a second car for us, mainly city driving.

Answer
Susie,
The M/Y 99 was not a real good year for the S70. It may have had its share of problems. As to how well the engine will last I can't say, not to many of the cars that I see of that year have that mileage, and the ones that do come close need a lot of repair. Keep in mind that the timing belt will become due in 10K and that done right with all the pulleys and tensioner and water pump is about $700.00, not to mention other worn out parts. If the price is low enough and the service records show all the maintance has been done and you are prepared to take on some repair work, have the car inspected by a Volvo tech and get a list of things that have been done and that will need attention. Do the inspection before you buy.
