I have a 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon.I will go for weeks without a problem but then the car will start to "sputter" thenit will be ok for a couple of miles then it will die and not start back up until it sits for a few hours or all day.When I'm trying to restart it right after it dies.There will be some smoke coming from the bottom of the Turbo and also there will be smoke coming from the tailpipe even if the engine doesn't start.

That is something that will have to be tested. Is the fuel pump pressure ok? Cap rotor wires, good? Plugs all fouled out? There may be fault codes stored read those and see if that will lead into a fault. Fuel filter clogged? In tank fuel pump not working. So many things. Smoke from tail pipe could indicate something is leaking into the exhaust and burning. Coolant or oil. Go to a shop that works on Volvos so they can check it out and advise you.
