Volvo: check light will not illuminate, crash pad, volvo 850

Question
QUESTION: I recently went to get the emissions done on my 1997 volvo 850 and it failed because the check engine light did not illuminate when the key was turned to position 2. Be fore I start tearing the dash apart, I want tocheck the fuse. Do you know where the fuse is for the check engine light?
ANSWER: Matt,
The check engine light is not fused separately. You will have to see if the bulb is burnt out or the bulb has been pulled out because it was always on. That would mean that there is a code stored and that will have to be fixed before going back to emissions.

QUESTION: Thanks for the response. Could you give me the steps to remove  and change the bulb. Is it the same steps as removing the dash cluster to replace the dash cluster bulbs? If my odometer is not working, will I be able to check and replace the gear that spins the odometer while I am changing the MIL bulb?
Matt

Answer
Matt,
Sure the process is the same for any bulb in the cluster. Remove the vents take out the screws, glove box and right air bag, remove the crash pad. At that time you can remove the speedo and replace the gear. Take things apart and make sure to mark the position of the screws you have removed. Sometimes a before photo helps.
