Volvo: 1986 Volvo 740GL ignition/fuel problem, fuel pressure gauge, fuel pump relay

Question
Our car will suddenly die, sometimes while moving slowly, moving fast or idling.  Have had distributor cap and wires replaced and rotor and new fuel pump (the expensive one on the outside, not in the fuel tank) replaced.  After dying, if we let the car sit for about 5 minutes, it will start again. On cold mornings the car will not start until the indicatorlights come on.  After dying out, the engine will crank fine but it won't turn over until a few minutes have passed.  Sometimes we can go for days and have no problems, then sometimes it'll happen several times a day.  We need help!!!!!!

Answer
Murrell,
Some testing is in order. Install a fuel pressure gauge and see if when the car will not start or dies out if it is due to loss of pressure. Your fuel pumps may not be coming on. Now that could also be due to no spark, if there is no spark then the pumps will not come on. So be ready to test for spark when this happens also. Some things that cause this; fuel pump relay, radio suppression relay, sometimes refered to as injector relay, pick up in the distributor, injection control unit, wire harness frayed. Test the feed pump in the tank as that there is a possibility some of the stalling could be due to lack of fuel. Fuel pressure at the rail is 42 psi. Feed pump pressure is 3to 5 psi.
