Volvo: feeling road through steering wheel, strut mounts, ball joints

I have a 2000 volvo s40
I can feel the road bumps through my steering wheel when its in the center but goes when i turn the steering as it engages power assist. What could this be?

Check the ball joints for play, make sure the tires are all true, balanced and properly aired up. See if there are any noticable defects in the steering rack, or any bushing that hold it or other front end parts. Test the struts see if they are weak and not cushioning the road bumps. If you replace the front struts also install new upper strut mounts, as they frequently fail and rattle.
