Volvo: engine thump when started cold, vovlo, best bet

My engine give a thunk in front when I start in the morning.  This has started with the onset of cold weather.  It's been idling rough, but it is an '84 and my mechanic suggested a tune-up. (He is a Vovlo mech).  I'll probably be taking the car to him in the next few days, but I'd like a little more info before I go (if possible).

Hard to say what the noise is. Only when the engine is cranked over that would tell me something is hitting like the fan on the shroud and that would indicate the motor mounts are bad. Best bet is to let someone hear the noise and begin to trace it.
