Volvo: coolant in oil, cylinder head gasket, blown head gaskets

Question
Have a '97 850 & have been noticing an exhaust type odor while the heater is operating. I had the oil changed & the tech noticed coolant in the oil. He thought a head gasket problem. Any suggestions & have there been any other reports of this problem?

Answer
Jean,
There have been cases of blown head gaskets. Also if the car is a turbo there is a oil cooler that is in the radiator that could have ruptured and therefore exchanging oil and coolant.
There is further testing that will have to be made to determine where the oil is coming from. Tests like cylinder leakage, compression and test for exhaust in coolant (cylinder head gasket test fluid).
