Volvo: volvo, 1996 volvo 960, position sensors


Question
i have a 1996 volvo 960 and im having a problem with the different modes. it will start in winter mode and u can put it in drive and it will only drive for a min and then it does nothing. it starts going through all three modes and its like it gets confused. if you turn it off and let it sit or remove the battery terminal it will reset its self and start all over. if you have any info it would mean alot thank you

Your car has the ability to store fault codes that might be posted in the trans control unit. Have those codes read and see what fault they indicate. You may have a faulty gear position sensor and or a bad mode switch. The gear position sensors get old and fail after a number of years. A fairly common problem with those sensors.
