Volvo: 2003 xc90 - brake shoe question, car fax report, brake caliper

Question
Ray - my wife and I are looking at buying a used 2003 xc90, 42,600 miles on it. I have a concern regarding the brake shoes (I believe that I'm referencing the correct part).  when looking at the car, I noticed that the brake shoes (or part that holds the brake pads) appeared rusted (or had a rusted color).  I did a car fax report on the car and the report came up clean (the car was purchased in NJ and ended up in Sarasota, FL for a few years - no flags regarding hurricane damage).  Is the rusty looking brake shoes a normal thing or a sign that we should not buy the car?

Answer
Ryan,
What you are referring to is the brake caliper. I know that calipers look rusty and living where there is salt in the air I would say what you see is normal. I would however take the car to a shop that knows Volvo and have them give the car an inspection and advise on the condition of the vehicle.
