Question -
I just purchased a 2007 XC 70 and my adult son inherited my
1998 (8?) 70 cross country.  last night, his first day driving it, he
couldn't get the steering wheel to lock and therefore couldn't
remove the key.  I tried later in the night and couldn't either
though I remember this happenned to me before and there was
a simple answer having, I think, to do with the gear shift lock.

I was hoping for a quick answer since he has to work today and I
hate him leaving the key in the car all day.

Thank you in advance.

Answer -
Kay,
If the gear shiter is not all the way into park the key can not be
removed. Make sure the shifter is going all the way forward. The
center console may have to be removed to see if something is
blocking it.

Answer
Kay,
Have the car looked at by a tech. I would say there is a problem in the linkage assembly and some adjustment or repair will be needed. There is not a short fix, sorry someone will have to inspect the car and see where the problem lies.
The system works like this if the vehicle is in Park a cable is pushed to the ingition switch allowing the key to be turned all the way to the off poaition and then you are able to remove the key. Somewhere in that system lies the problem. Now there are are several cases where the ignition switch lock assembly has gone bad and needs replacing. That is something that will need to be tested also. On those cars what tends to happen is the key will turn all the way around. Probably not the problem your having, but worth testing to be sure.
