Volvo: ETS light, stutter, ecm

Volvo 1999 XC V70 300,150kms. I turned on the car this morning and the car turned over and stuttered for about 5 secs, and the ETS light came on. I turned it off and left it for about 5 secs and turned it on again. The light stayed on after running its diagnostics check but the stutter went away and the engine purred as normal and the car operated fine at low speeds (I didn't run it on the highway...)

Can I run the car is this state? I have never had any problems before. I've read that the ECM may need to be cleaned or worse, replaced!

What do you suggest?

In the engine control unit there is will be a code. That code will need to be addressed and repaired.
The system will need to be cleared of all codes to pass emissions. As to the extent of the repair, it will likely be expensive, but also necessary.
