Volvo: How many miles do these cars get., hp engine, leakage test

Question
For the most part I have taken good care of the car. I have the oil changed every 3000 miles and I had the trans fluid changed when I got the car. I have also found a very good Volvo mechanic. He looked over the car this year and said everything looks good. I was just worried because of the amount of miles on it. About the engine. Is it hard to find a good used engine or tran. In case something should happen I would consider swapping out a engine or tran if the cost is right, but now a day you can pick up a older Volvo for $1500. If I should ever have to shop again, what model and year should I look for.

About six years ago I bought a 1993 940 with 156,000 miles on her and was a litte worried about the car lasting. Well I still have it and I drive it everyday and it has well over 250,000 on it. My worry is that I just started a job where I will be driving all over (about 100 miles a day) and I would love to drive my Volvo, but I'm afraid that its getting to the end of its life. The only main problem is a very minor oil leak and the paint has peeled off of the hood and roof. It has very little power, but I know that is common with only 115 hp engine. My question is. Is it common to get alot of miles out of these cars and is there anything I sould be looking out for as problem in the future.

Corey,
If the car has been taken care of then the life will be long. Have you done all the required maintaance? If so then I would say that there is still life left. You can have a compression and cylinder leakage test done to see if the engine is worn. Have you also maintained the trans and rear axle, that is something with old age that will also wear out. I have clients that have over three hundred thousand miles on their cars. Maybe you would like to find a used engine with less mileage to replace yours. How well do you feel you have taken care of the car? If things have slipped by without repair consider repairing those things.

Answer
Corey,
My opinoin is the last of the good Volvos is the 940's. They stopped making them in 96. Second choice is 96 to 98 960 or S90. The newer cars I do not have a good feeling for. They have not been around long enough to tell what mileage they get and how well they hold up.
