Volvo: Volvo 1996-resetting drive cyle, smog test, auto mechanics

I have a 1997 Volvo 850 built in 9/96 that will not pass the Calif smog test because the drive cycles will not reset. Auto mechanics are telling me to fail the test and go to a referee and get an exemption. I have driven the car many miles to no avail.  What is the drive cycle for a 1997 (1996) Volvo 850 and can I do it myself. Please help.

If you have been driving the car for a few days after the check engine light has been reset, your only choice is to go to someone that can read the statis of the readiness and drive the car to fullfil all the readiness paramenters. The dealer sometimes has to "flash" the control units to get them to work.
