you suggested that I clear the adaptation on my 96 850t. How?

You said that you have a code reader, right? Plug into the OBD II go to Motronic 4.4 scroll to reset adaption, reset.
If your scanner can not reset adaption, try and disconnect the battery for a few minutes, or unplug the control unit for a few.. You have the radio code handy if you disconnect the battery?
