Volvo: Volvo 850 Fuel Pump Removal + New Electrical System Question, crackling noises, volvo 850

Question
Thank you very much for your help with the fuel pump...I did the work with a friend as you instructed and we were able to replace the pump...the car finally runs...BTW I'm having trouble finding my own post on these forums...this was posted publicly right?

Instead of posting another subject (unless you want to move this) I have some questions about the electrical system...

1. I dont know if all these are related, but my radio works when I turn the car on, and after a while it starts fading out, like the front speakers will work, but you won't hear the rear...eventually everything quiets down and when you turn it up real loud you can hear some crackling noises through the speakers...next day it works again for a short while...do you know why that would be happening? I checked wire connections and they seem fine... Or is this just the radio going bad...?

2. My odometer stopped working....it seems like everything took a s*it on my within a short period of time...could this be electrically related? or totally seperate? This probably isn't an easy fix, so I'm thinking about leaving it alone...

3. The whole A/C panel broke (started smoking last year) and I never got a new one. Is a used one feasable? Where can I get one of those...? Or is there a way to bypass the system with a switch just to turn the A/C on an off at least?

Sorry about so many questions in one, but whenever you have time to answer each, I appreciate it...

Question -
I have a '93 850 GLT.  I know for a fact the fuel pump is bad.

So how do I get this thing out... I took off the larger circle cover in the trunk on the right side.  I see a couple hoses and plugs coming from the top of it...I don't see any screws or anything...

Do I need special tools to get this out? Can anyone give me a quick how to?

Also, ould a pump from Autozone or Discount Auto be ok?

Rad,
The two hoses are "quick connect" lines. Pull up on the outer ring and pull off the hose. Remember the position of the hoses that you pull off. It's a bit tricky holding that outer portion up and pulling on the line, be careful. Up plug the power wire. Now loosen that outer ring holding the pump in, turn counter clockwise to loosen. The ring comes off and the pump pulls out.
I have had bad luck with those "cheap" fuel pumps. First I think you only get the pump, so you will have to take apart the old one and reinstall the new pump on the old housing. Secondly I have seen many housing leak at the top where the wires come out. So I think that a complete new assembly is worth the extra cost. Just think how long the old one lasted. However your choice!

Answer
Rad,
There have been quite a few problems with the radio and I would say that you need a replacement. Maybe used.

If the odometer quit and the speedo continues to work, there is a gear inside the speedo is broken and will require replacing.

A used A/C control head may work fine try searching "used volvo parts". Let them know if it is a manual or automatic control head. It would be possible to wire in a switch to by pass the C/unit.
