Volvo: Check Engine Light, volvo s70 2000, obd ii

Question
Volvo S70 2000
The Check Engine light came on and I know it was from the gas cap not being replaced tightly enough (this has happened before). Rather than taking it to my mechanic to have the Check Engine light reset (turned off), is there any way that I can do it myself? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Mike,
You will need a scanner that will read the codes and check the system. Plug it into the OBD II plug enter the "engine" area read the codes and then erace them. No scanner! Try disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours, that might reset (or zero) the control unit. You will also need to reprogram the radio so have the radio code handy. Let me know if the battery thing works. Most times the control unit has stored power to keep the codes from being lost due to a low or disconnected battery. Also continuing to drive the car with a tight cap and no further fault codes should also extinguish the light. If the system does not see any further faults and goes through a series of "no fault" drive cycles the light should reset.
