Volvo: 1995 Volvo 850 Automatic Trans. Slippage, volvo 850, wrecking yards

Question
Hi,

I bought a 95 Volvo 850 Automatic, non turbo, with 140,000 miles on it. It had a check engine light on. I took it to a local shop and they said it had 2 codes in the trans. s1 and s2. Something about the Solenoids in the transmission. I was told though that it could be a trans that is starting to fail also and the cost to fix the solenoids I might as well replace the tranny.

What are your thoughts.

Thanks,

Doug

Answer
Doug,
The transmission in those cars go out often and with the miles on it, and if you want a reliably trans go for a rebuilt or if cost is a factor try some Volvo wrecking yards for a used one. Get the part number off yours so it is easy to locate one that will fit your car. Just doing the solnoids will be a fairly large bill, and you will still have other internal trans parts that have 140K on them.
