Volvo: Disc Brakes, alloy wheels, volvo s60

Question
I have a Volvo S60 year model 2000 that I recently purchased and has only 10,000 miles.  The brakes work fine, but I have noticed an excessive amount of what appears to be soot or graphite all over my alloy wheels.  It comes off easily, but reappears after a very short while.

Answer
Jerry,
That would be brake dust. All newer cars tend to do that. My opinion would be to clean the wheels often. If you try different pads you may not like the service you get out of them, and that might include squealing and vibrations. If you install dust covers you stand the chance of seriously overheating the calipers and rotors.
