Volvo: 1993 960 wont start, crank sensor, dielectric grease

Question
no no, this is far more complex than the battery. that's the first thing i checked.
i turn the key and the lights all come on, radio works, clock's right on time, i can move the windows all over the place, etc.
i took the alarm system out of the car tonight, and the thing still won't start.
now that the alarm's out of the question, i'm a little more stumped.
there is a spark, but no explosion inside to make it start. i tried adding ether, didn't work.
timing belt is good, compression is good, plugs are receiving fuel so they're okay, pressure at fuel rail is okay, battery ground wire was just replaced last month so i know that's not broken again, and there are absolutely no codes showing up on the computer. perhaps that's because i can't get the car to start and register the codes, either...

Answer
Katie,
Usually there are codes to read when a car will not start, but there is also the exception. Check the cam sensor and crank sensor for defects, making sure the conections are good and tight. Just go ahead and clean them and apply some dielectric grease to the contacts.  There are some ground wires on the left side attached to the motor mount bracket, if they come loose they cause a no start without setting any codes. I have seen on those cars where it has been tried to start so many times that the cylinders become washed down and the compression is to low to fire. Those car I squirt a small amount of oil into the cylinders to bring up that compression, and that helps them to start. One thing also found during that is the car cranks over, but just a little faster than normal (due to the lower compression). I am thinking that since you have spark and even with the small amount of ether, no start then sensors or low compression is possible. Look at the boot over the throttle housing and make sure that it is in place and not leaking.
