Volvo: oil light does not work (no power), volvo 240, oil light

Question
Thanks for the help. Let me just be sure I understand you. I think I have found the oil pressure sensor (next to oil filter on side of engine). One wire runs to it, this wire has power in it (when key in pos 2); is this the wire to the oil light? If it is then a simple test would be to connect this wire to a place where I know there is a good ground connection, and the oil light should light up, right? Or would i short something out? If the light came on then the problem is a bad connection to the sensor or a broken switch in the sensor itself, right?

Thanks again

Question -
I recently got my dads old volvo 240 Stationcar from 1991. For years several things have been failing (central locking, radio, rear wipers) and I am now trying to bring them back. It has been pretty easy going so far, mostly a case of reconnecting wires and changing bulbes.
This problem however I cannot figure out: The low oil warning light in the instument cluster dosent work. Or I think it dosent; because it does not come on like all the other warning lights when key is turned to position 2. It is not the socket or the bulb - this I am sure of - I have tried switching bulbes and sockets from the other (working) warning lights. Somehow this particular light is not getting any power. I have looked behind the instrument cluster box; there is a wire (red and white) not connected to the instrument cluster (just hanging there..) which has power in it - but I have no idea whether this has any relation to the oil light and i dont see any where to attatch it.
Any suggestions on what could be wrong? Obiviously it is not a fuse problem since the other warning lights work fine, and it dosent seem that the problem is actually connected to the oil or the oil pressure sensor; unless the power comes through this to the light even in key position 2.
But what do I know - any help is welcome.

Answer -
the red and white wire is for the tachometer , you might have a clock, but all 240's have this wire, don't plug it into anything the big clock and tachometer are interchangeable parts so if you can find a tachometer you can put it in instead of a clock.  there is a brown wire near the oil filter on the right front of the engine this is the wire for that warning light, that wire , oh you have a 91, anyway check for a wire there , or somewhere that might have broken or fallen off, the warning light comes on when the oil pressure switch makes contact when engine is off, so the wire is really a ground wire, if my info is wrong you can check www.brickboard.com there are lot's of volvo enthusiasts on there , about 10 people will give you an answer

Answer
if you want you can connect the wire to the neg. battery terminal or any metal on the engine, (this is what the oil switch does when it's working) and the light should come on, with the key on, the oil pressure switch is a grounding switch, so the wire is connected to the neg. battery terminal , if it lights up then you have a bad oil pressure sensor.
