Volvo: Water Pump!, volvo 740 turbo wagon, disabled american veteran

Question
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE; NEED HELP DESPERATELY…

1992 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon, A/T, 142,000 Miles, driven sensibly by elderly, Disabled American Veteran…

The water pump started to leak approximately 1000 miles ago.  The mechanic that replaced the water pump is an expert Triumph & MG mechanic and restorer and considered by many customers as excellent with Volvo and Saab.

Well to make a long story short… He has replaced the water pump 3 times, the first and second by one manufacturer and the third time by a different maker.  He said although they were not Volvo OEM, they were a very good brand and he has never had any problems with them before.

The problem is within a day or two of installation they begin to leak.  He believes they are leaking from the vent hole (pee hole).  This latest pump is leaking severely.  The water bottle appears to be circulating water and the temperature gauge doesn’t register any higher then mid point.  I constantly add 50/50 anti-freeze/water combination to avoid the engine from overheating.

He has not charged me for any of the replacement pumps or labor since the first replacement and as a result I do not believe he is trying to cheat me.  Fact is customers speak highly of his ethics.

He is baffled and has told me he doesn’t know what the problem is and obviously can not continue to replace pumps free of charge, this I agree with and wholly understand but it doesn’t fix the original problem of a leaky water pump.

My questions are… what can be causing this problem?  What can I do to fix the problem?  I truly can not afford another car, I enjoy this car immensely and it is in very good condition... (With the exception of the water pump).

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Regards,
Joseph

Answer
well i'm pretty sure theres a metal pipe (on the 92's anyway, i know theres one on my 87) coming out of the back of the water pump and it goes under the exhaust manifold to a heater hose in the back (i'm not sure if this is on your car) if it is on your car the o ring has to be changed , so this should be looked at unless he's sure it's the vent hole, it's possible that he "thinks" it's the vent hole and its the 0 ring on that pipe, if it is the vent hole then it's his responsibility because he's getting defective parts, i don't know where you live but you should get quality parts, there might be a bad batch of water pumps from this place, my recomendation is to get the new water pump at a quality place , there is a very good company i worked for that supplies foreign auto parts , its called "worldpac" they are in most states, and you can get it via ups, tell him you want the part from them.....they are the home depot of foreign auto parts-very high quality (made in europe) and low price, he will be very grateful to you for finding this place and you will have a part that works (thank god i know how to type)
