Volvo: Transmission snatch volvo v70, volvo v70, diagnostic scanner

Question
Hi Ray

My volvo V70 estate 2.4lt year 1999 this is follow on from earlier email. the Transmission snatchs at the idling speeds the idle speed is erattic other wise the car drives fine changes gears all right. due to the wire on the idle speed controller being trapped and shorting out on the engine block. how can i tell if the idle speed control vavle is faulty. the volvo dealer says new transmission needed £2000. can't trust anything they say, do you know any way to test the Idle vavle as my feelingis that this is most likely the cause, any help has any one come across this before.

Answer
Mike,
The car will have to hooked up to the diagnostic scanner and that will show the signals it is being sent and that would indicate if it was indeed working. Now who do you know that has that type of scanner? Are there shops other than the dealer that have this scanner and the knowlege to test it? Sorry there is no simple way of testing. On some fuel systems there is a software download that may fix idle problems. However that requires the special equipment and a subscription to do it.
