Volvo: 2000 s40 turb0-problem gear shifting, shifting gears, geers

Question
I am so excited and relieved.
As they were changing the transmission fluid they said it smelled burnt (apparently not a good sign).  But then went ahead as planned to see how that goes before doing anything else.  I have now already driven her 60 miles  and she runs perfectly.  NO PROBLEMS!! :)
My next question is I bought her a year and a half ago with almost 46,000 miles on her.  She now has 70,000.  I have been taking her to Jiffy Lube regularly for oil changes but now I am wondering if I need to take her to more of a specialist for this service.
Thanks again for your advice.

They called and said the sensors all came back in good condition.  He said that they are going to change my transmision fluid and screen (which is supposed to be done every 25,000 miles) to see if that helps...before they start tearing into the transmision...LOL  I pick up my car in a couple of hours to see if I am happy with what they did....We'll see:)

Question -
Starting out on my drive, my car seems fine as far as shifting gears.  But soon
into my trip, it will not shift gears.  I can get it to shift by popping it into
neutral and popping it back into drive, almost like a manual transmission.
Then some time into my trip, it will finally run normal as far as shifing into
the right geers.
I have checked the transmission fluid and all seems normal.
Any advice as to what may be wrong would be great.

Answer -
Carrie,
Have the car checked for any codes in the transmission. This sounds like a
gear posistion sensor problem. The codes that might be stored will help to
pinpoint the problem.
Answer -
Carrie,
Ok good for you, sounds like the right thing to do. You would not want to drive the car to long in the condition it was in just in case it could do more damage. After getting the car fixed you will love your Volvo again.
Answer -
Carrie,
Now the fact there are no codes stored is good. You should be on the right track taking care of the fluid.

Answer
Carrie,
Yes by all means go to someone that can service your car per the service recomendations of Volvo. It should be time for a tune up and coolant flush, check the timing belt. You need to have someone check the front suspension and brakes.
Giving the car a good safety inspection.
