Volvo: 240 GL starting issues, tank fuel, exact problem

Question
Jason, I scoured your responses to previous questions, but never found someone with my exact problem.  I have a 1989 240 GL (automatic), I'm having issues with it stalling after it seems to have started.  I have to give it gas while I start it or it will stall- particularly if it has been sitting for days.  (In that case, I almost can't start it at all.)  Once I get it going, it sometimes stalls when I put it in gear.  However, it NEVER stalls once I'm on my way, and if it's been sitting for less than a day, it starts with no problem.  I'm thinking clogged throttle body or fuel filter, but I'm sure you'd have a better idea.  I would appreciate any ideas you have.  Thanks!

Answer
Throttle body is unlikely, in that it would affect your performance when warm as well, but if you end up digging around, clean it anyway.  Fuel filter is a good idea to check, as well as the injectors, particularly the cold start injector, when can cause cold running symtoms like you described.  Also, make sure it's not something as simple as the idle being set to low.  It should be about 800rpm, and near 1000 when warm.  Also check to make sure your in-tank fuel pump is working, and check for abnormal sounds coming from the main fuel pump, which is a sign it is working hard to make up for a non-working in-tank pump.  Also start keeping track of the circumstances surrounding the hard starts.  Does it get worse when it is cold out, or wet?  Good luck!
