Volvo: 850 GLT overheating 1993 automatic, head gasket, careful eye

Hi jimmy my car was over heating i changed the thermostat old one was broken.Put in new antifreeze ran unit in driveway for 15 minutes
in drive way worked ok.Drove car about 5 miles
and heat gauge spiked suddenly.Pulled over let cool down Fan is running,its was so hot that even after you turn off vechile it runs for 5 minutes to cool it down.After it cooled down i opened the cap to where antifreez goes it was dry
filled up drove back home empty. I checked the oil doesnt seem to be water in oil so im hoping its not a head gasket. new thermostat is working
Any suggestions would be helpful. THANKS RICK

Hello Rick! It is possible that there was an air pocket in the cooling system. Try filling the system again. Drive it and keep a careful eye on the guage. If the coolant goes empty or the guage spikes. There is a leak that will need to be checked out ASAP.
