Dear Jimmy,

I have a 1989 740 which over the last year has randomly failed to restart after being driven for a while and occasionally the engine shuts down while just driving along the road.

The car is perfectly well behaved at all other times including cold starting.

I have replaced the ignition LT pulse generator three times and the fuel relay once.

I have also checked and replaced as needed any vacuum pipes which where in poor condition.

Can you offer any suggestions as to my next repair attempt.

With thanks
Bill Bradshaw

Hello Bill! I'm not sure what you mean by LT pulse generator. However, The most common causes for that problem are, the crank sensor,(if it has a yellow stripe, replace it). The Power stage or igition module located under the hood on the left side fender. Also the black injection relay located on the shock tower. Try those if you haven't already.

followup ?

Jimmy,

replaced ignition module (my desription Low tension pulse generator for the coil LT side), replaced injection relay ( behind dash ash tray ), there is no sign of any crank sensor which I understand would be located an inch or so under the distributor. There is however a cable coming out of the distributor and into the wiring loom and going of to the left hand side of the car.
Any further suggestions or clarification you can suggest?
thanks in advance

Answer
Hey Bill! The Turbo models in 89, have a hall effect switch in the distributor. Is your car a turbo? It is best to replace the distributor if the hall effect switch is at fault. The injection relay is located under the hood not behind the ashtray. That one is the fuel pump relay.
