Volvo: remote starter, volvo s80, remote starter

Question
Hi Jimmy...
Wondering if you forsee any problems with  installation of a remote starter in a 2001 Volvo S80...(other than having to pay $160.00 for an extra key!!) The guy who is going to do it says he does it in a way that it won't affect the warranty...and that unless I want to hear a lot of grumbling from the dealer, I shouldn't tell them what I'm doing.  Any thoughts?  THANKS...

Answer
Hello Dana! Be careful of the remote starter. I have seen some guys really hack up wiring. The S80 electrical system is very hi-tech. If the wrong wire is touched it can cause all kinds of problems. An expereinced Volvo technician will know if the wiring has been tampered with. A new key is expensive because, each key has its own micro chip that needs to be programmed in order for the car to start. A new key will open the doors, but it will not start the car without the proper software and programming. Even with the remote start, you will need an extra key so that the the computer will start the car. I hope this helps you.
