Volvo: 1991 240 / starts, then stalls when go to put in gear, maf sensor, throttle body

Question
My son returned to college this afternoon, about an hour and a half drive.  No problems with the car this weekend while home, or traveling back today.  About two hours later he went out to start the car, started and would run when given gas, but would stall when he would release the gas pedal and reach for the brake to put in gear.  Tried several times with the same result.  went back out an hour or so later and it started and didn't die this time, he drove it around the parking lot with no difficulties.  What could cause the car to start fine, but die when the accelerator is released?  Could this be the start of a problem that will worsen?  1991, 240

Answer
Hello Tom! I have seen a MAF sensor cause that problem you are describing. It may be causing the engine to stall under a load. I would strt by checking the MAF sensor first. I would also check the throttle body. It may need to be cleaned and adjusted.
