Volvo: timing belt, volvo 240 dl, timing belt replacement

Question
Hi
I just got  1987 volvo 240 dl station wagon. 177,000 miles -
I am just trying to get it through the NY inspection
Mechanic told me it needs new exhaust (I knew that ) including
front pipe. He also said it needs a new timing belt - not broken.
Question for you is do I have to change the timing belt at this
time or can it wait? - it is a big expense $350 - is it necessary to
pass the inspection? what is the recomended milage/age for
replacement?
Thnk you
Debby

Answer
Hello Debby! The timing belt replacement interval is 3 years or 50,000 miles. It should not be an issue with state inspection. If the belt is needed, I would recommend doing it. If it breaks, it will leave you stranded. It will not cause any other engine damage though. I hope this info helps you.
