Volvo: 1999 Volvo V70 ETS Light, mass air flow sensors, air flow sensors

Question
We have a 1999 Volvo V70 90K miles, which has the ETS light coming on frequently (started to be every several months with about 50K miles. Now two years and 40K miles later it's happening almost daily.

Symptoms are very slight roughness in accelleration (even when light is off) light comes on and the car gets really rough around 70MPH plus. At a complete stop in park, the car will idle rough like it could stall but it doesn't. In park, revving the enginge is OK until the high 3000 RPM's where it gets very rough. Shutting the car off for a minute and restarting will clear the light and the symptoms mentioned when the light is off, but they return once the light comes on.

At around 88K miles, we had the throttle sensor connections cleaned, new plugs and new air filter. The light stayed off for a couple of weeks after these steps. Then we just had the throttle control wire and surrounding components cleaned by our mechanic becaue they were all gummed up, but still the problem. I'm ready to to trade this car in and go back to stricty Honda's. Any advice? I'm told that replacing the Electromic Throttle is an $800 job. Are there other pieces to this puzzle? Is any of this owner performable? If so, where might I find diagrams? I've seen answers regarding throttle position sensors, throttle switches, Mass Air Flow Sensors.

I should also not that we only use 92 or higher octane gas. HELP!

Thanks for you help

Answer
Hello Bruce! You need to replace the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module). When it is replaced, a new updated software package must be downloaded to the car. The job cannot be done yourself. You will have to go to a dealer or a Volvo specialist.
