Hey Jimmy, how are you doing? I hope well!  I just purchased a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9.  Beautiful car!  The other day after I have driven the car a while and parked it for about 20 minutes and started it back up, I heard a little Valve tap, and I after I drove it around the block it went away.  I dont know if that is a serious problem, or if I should use thicker oil?  I checked the dipstick to see if there was any bubbles in the oil and there wasnt, so I guess that air is not getting in the oil?  I am using premium gasoline and I am sure that, that has nothing to do with that.  The car has 62,000 on it right now, and I dont know if this is a common problem or what?  And the car idles a little rough too, not like its going to stall or anything, its just a little loud inside the car if the stereo is turned down?  is that normal too?  It sounds like a 4 banger idiling in the inside, on the outside it sounds fine.  I really appreciate your time and help, and your advice! I look forward to hearing back from you.  I just made a big investment and hope its nothing serious.  I love Volvos!! Thanks again!

Hey Cameron! The can be caused by the CVVT valve. It is valve that controls cam timing. The valves could need an adjustment, although it is not due until 105k. There could also be a problem with oil pressure. The S80's had a problem with the oil pump pickup tube seals. Do you have the service records? Was the car well maintained? I would get it looked at by the dealer or a qualified Volvo technician ASAP before there is any engine damage. Let me know what they find. I will help you as much as I can!

Hey Jimmy, thakns for the information.  I called Volvo and asked them as well and they told me that the tapping noise was the fuel injectors, and that was a common noise?  I dont know if that is right or not?  I dont have any records of the car, but we had it checked out when we bought it and they said that everything looked good on the car, new oil, new tranny fluid, new fan belt, new air filter, new battery etc....  The noise sounds like a tick tick tick noise, and after driving it for a minute, it goes away.  I looked at the oil and there is no bubbles in the oil(which the Volvo dealer said if that was the case(if there was bubbles) that air was getting into the oil and causing the tap, and thats not the case.  So I am not sure whats going on?  If you can tell me more, great!  I appreciate your research and help, please email me back when you can!  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hey Cameron! The injectors do make some noise, but they shouldn't get too loud. I have never heard of looking for bubbles in the oil. I would take it to another dealer if it is possible. It sounds like the dealer you are going to is not that great.
