Driving & Driving Test Tips: Right Turn on Red, oncoming traffic, red light

Question
I was wondering how you know when to turn right at a red light. The other day I waited, saw nobody coming, and turned right. About halfway through my turn, the cars across from me started turning left (in the same direction towards me). Is there any way to know when they will begin to turn so I can avoid cutting it so close?

Answer
I am assuming on factor here - that the oncoming traffic had an "advance green".
If so, (and you may not always realize that) then extra caution must be used.

While you were waiting/checking to turn Right on Red, did you see them approaching?  If so, did it appear they would arrive at the intersection before you could safely complete your turn?  If that vehicle was traveling at 30 MPH, he was going some 35 feet per second.  In 10 seconds that distance can add up.    If in doubt - wait it out.

Keep in mind that you are NOT required to turn right on Red - even if someone is honking behind you.
