Driving & Driving Test Tips: Getting a Learners Permit, private drivers, ed course

Hi. I'm 16 and a half, living in California. I'm trying to get my permit, but I'm not sure how the process works. Some people say that I can just study for the permit test, go to the DMV and take the test. Other people say that I need to complete a driver's ed course before I can get my permit. Which is it? Thanks!

Just call the DMV/Secretary of State's office and ask.

Most states these days require that you take the drivers ed class in high school, or you must take a private drivers ed course.   Otherwise, you may not be able to get your license till you are 17 or 18.

You can call them, or read their rules as easily as I can.
