Driving & Driving Test Tips: Collision - logical assumption, expert witness testimony, southbound section

Question
I turned left from the southbound section of a split roadway and proceeded along the avenue towards the intersection of the northbound section of the split roadway.  My wife was also in the car.  As I approached the intersection preparing to stop I looked up at the lights and observed that they were already green.  I proceeded into the intersection and was struck immediately by a motorcycle driven by an older gentleman.  My car was spun 180 degrees around.
The police have now charged me with running a red light - which I did not do.  However the police with the help of their expert witness who took measurements are making the case that I did run the red light.  Since my view of any northbound traffic was completely blocked by massive contruction barricades it would have been completely foolhardy for me to have run the red light into an unknown situation - but the police don't see it that way.  There are no other witnesses, only myself, my wife, and the motorcylist who claims he was not at fault.
It seems much more likely to me that the motorcyclist was racing the yellow light which had already turned into red by the instant he crossed into the intersection.
Can you give me any advice on how I can defend myself against these charges as I feel that the police expert witness testimony will trump any eyewitness testimony from myself and my wife?

Answer
Red light violations are hard to prove or defend.  It usually comes down to a witness of the lighting at the time of the collision, but in this case there may be some hope.  You must obtain a timing chart for the intersection.  You must look at the timing of the lights from the southbound direction of your path, I assume there was a light for southbound traffic, and analyze the chart to see if the lights for eastbound could have been green when you arrived at that location.  If there were no lights for southbound traffic, then it is your word against the motorcyclistfrom what information you sent me.
