Driving & Driving Test Tips: HGV licence, lgv licence, police checks

Question
I am in a funny situation. My ex wife has set up with a man who I can only determine as dodgy! (Police checks, accusation of rape etc etc etc). Anyway....

She claims he has a HGV drivers licence, but has only been driving a car since December 2000. (ie passed his test then).

The thing is, I have found out that he takes my children on the wagons belonging to his Dads haulage business. Is it likely that he does have a drivers licence for HGVs, or is this likely to be wrong? Any thoughts would help.

Many thanks.

Answer
Hi there,

Yes, I can see your dilemma, and share in your concern for your children, however, it is not an easy question to answer.

By virtue of the fact that a driving licence has only been held since Dec 2000, I would say that it is unlikely, but not impossible for this person to hold a LGV licence.

If he calls it a HGV then be suspicious, it hasn't been called that for more than ten years…

However, if his Father allows him to drive his trucks whilst knowing that he does not hold a licence, then he is risking his Operators Licence, which could be fatal to his business. Also consider what size trucks he drives, one does not need a LGV licence for trucks less than 3.5 tonnes.

I wonder whether you have shared your concern with the police? If he has a history with them, they may just be interested enough to check, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Maybe a better course would be to contact the local Traffic Area Office of the Dept of Transport where the Operators Licence of the Company is registered (In the Phone book) and voice your concerns with them; they are likely to take you much more seriously. And they can easily check it out.

If you hit a stonewall, and remain concerned, feel free to get back to me again and I will see if I can help, But obviously… I would need a lot more information.

As this would be likely to get personal, you can call direct to abridge@bigfoot.com  if you wish.

Best wishes
Phil.
