Driving & Driving Test Tips: Idle mode on automatic driving, traffic intersection, automatic car

Question
At a traffic intersection, what is the recommended setting of the gear for an automatic car? I ussually shift the gear to Parking (P) whenever I stop at a traffic signal especially at long interval between signals. A friend remarked that I should just step on the brake while waiting for the signal to change. Is he correct?

Answer
Joey-

In an automatic transmission car, the park gear is designed to lock the wheels after you are parked and leaving the vehicle, so it probably is not a good idea at intersections. It also robs you of the ability to react quickly if you see a danger to the car, like someone rear-ending you.

I teach that you leave your foot on the brake and I think that it is the best way to handle that situation.

Hope this helps and good luck
