Transportation and Vehicle Safety: Vehicle Rules In California, california vehicle code, commercial venture

Question
I was wondering what the law says in regards to having a jeep that has an open top be on the road as a tour guide vehicle.  Does a jeep have to have a roll bar over it??  An example of the jeep I would like to get is on the link below.

Answer
Hi John and Welcome to AllExperts!

The short answer is yes, you can operate the vehicle without the top.

In California, you may not remove anything that wasn't designed to be user removable for safe operation. If the doors are user removable, that would be legal to remove also as long as the mirror(s) are retained, as an example. No roll bar is required under the California Vehicle Code, unless it was installed by the manufacturer. Then you must keep it.

Remember, The CVC was designed as a minimum standard of rules to be followed and enforced. Civil liability may suggest you keep the top on and have a roll bar. In the event of an injury accident, it is expected that you have taken every reasonable precaution to safeguard your passengers, especially in a commercial venture.

Hope this has helped!

Have a great day....
