What distance should I stay away from the car in front of me when stopping at a red light?

The rule of thumb is far enough away to see the roadway behind the rear tires of the car in front of you.

This provides enough room to move out of that lane in an emergency, and prevents you from striking the car in front of you should you become rear ended [in most cases].
